But this can't happen overnight. There are lots of funds that raised $200mm + in the last few years. They have capital they need to deploy.

Re: Message to Startups: Risk hasn’t increased….it’s just changed

At the time, we weren't planning on going past the family/friends round - we were going to bootstrap it ourselves with a few hundred thousand, our group of passionate team members, and a low burn rate. Mind you, we're all young professionals or recent grads, some of us still in school, so this was going to be more of a dorm room style start-up.

Well, at this point we've changed our plans and will be going the traditional route - we've brought in more experienced businesspeople, gotten help and advice from others that we've sought out, and will be taking an approach that would require an angel/seed funding round but grow the company into something bigger. Our technology and ideas were and are strong enough; it's just a change of direction.

We probably would have reached this stage and approach in the future anyway, but I think the economy pushed us to turn to this sooner, rather than grow it more organically.

Re: Message to Startups: Risk hasn’t increased….it’s just changed

I remember attending this lecture at Stern about business plans. The professor was asked about the chances of VC participation in the current, post bubble world. But many corporate investors/acquirers have no such excuse, and yet consistently fail to buy at bottom lows, and make big mistakes at the peaks, as I wrote here:

http://tinyurl.com/76qyww

Re: Message to Startups: Risk hasn’t increased….it’s just changed

Hello !!
Please join me if possible!!

Re;
http://www.linkedin.com/in/...

Jose G. We raised over $500k in a family/friends seed round in March of 2008 to get us in the position we are today. It's true we couldn't get that kind of round done today.

However, now there are more people on the sidelines in the tech world that you can put to work for equity (vs cash)....so bootstrapping is MUCH cheaper than it was in early 2008. We have a lower burn and a stronger team than we had just six months ago.

While building a $10mm company still makes you an entrepreneur, it definitely doesn't make you a fundable startup - even for angels. With that kind of business the risks are still there but the upside is gone for investors. I highly recommend you spend no time trying to raise money and focus all your efforts on gathering people up that believe in you, the business and are willing to help you do the work.

Re: Message to Startups: Risk hasn’t increased….it’s just changed

My comment is similar to Corey's. For entrepreneurs trying to bootstrap with a little bit from family, friends, and angels, the collapse in financial markets has most certainly made an impact. My own company had promises from the one family member who has any kind of money, but he lost too much in the crash and isn't experienced enough to believe us or research it himself when we tell him that other risk factors have gone down.

You might say that this stage or size of company isn't what you had in mind, but isn't an entrepreneur with a passion to build a $10 million company rather than the $100 million company still an entrepreneur? We're still aiming to create jobs and bring a great piece of software to market, and those are worthwhile aims.

Re: Message to Startups: Risk hasn’t increased….it’s just changed

I'd agree with that assessment, the main challenge for early stage startups is in finding angels / bridge financing. For the groups of startups that were able to raise that kind of money (or don't need it) before the market crash, they are sitting pretty. Angels who found themselves with decimated stock portfolios tend to be tighter with their money than they used to be.

Re: Interview with StyleHop’s founder, David Reinke

Hi Lauren.

Please contact Emily Schreiber regarding our internship program (eschreiber@stylehop.com)

Re: Interview with StyleHop’s founder, David Reinke

I love this whole thing.
